Electrodialysis Technologies for Lithium Polishing

Electrodialysis Technology for Lithium Polishing

At Licube, we’re pioneering a new category in lithium processing: electrochemical lithium polishing. While many companies focus solely on extraction, Licube is delivering the next step—refining lithium to battery-grade quality using a fully electric, modular electrodialysis system. Our technology enables lithium miners, DLE operators, battery recyclers, and manufacturers to achieve ultra-high lithium hydroxide purity (>99.9%) without the need for chemical reagents or energy-intensive calcination steps. It’s zero-carbon, chemical-free, scalable, and future-ready.

Built on Deep Scientific Foundations

Licube’s journey began in Japanese university laboratories, where our founding team worked on lithium isotope separation for nuclear fusion applications. From that work, we developed a novel three-electrode, dual-power-supply electrodialysis system, optimized to handle low-concentration brines with high selectivity and throughput. What started as research for fusion has become a breakthrough in lithium purification. Since 2018, we’ve filed five international patents protecting the core of our system, enabling us to lead the field in lithium polishing technology using electrodialysis.

Lithium Polishing as a Service

We offer “Polishing as a Service” to the lithium value chain. Customers send pre-concentrated lithium (≥80% purity), and we return high-purity lithium hydroxide, ready for battery applications. This “final mile” is often a bottleneck for lithium producers, especially those relying on outsourced or chemical-heavy refining.

Licube solves this with an electric-only process that:

  • Delivers >99.9% lithium hydroxide purity
  • Removes Na, Ca, Mg, and other trace impurities with minimal loss
  • Requires no acids, bases, or solvents—just renewable electricity

Enabling Low-Carbon, Local Supply Chains

By establishing refining capacity in the U.S. and Japan, Licube supports domestic sourcing goals such as the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act and Japan’s EV battery strategy. Since the refining step occurs locally, our customers’ lithium products may qualify as “Made-in-America” or “Made-in-Japan,” even if the original source is abroad. Most importantly, Licube’s process has an ultra-low environmental footprint. With no chemical waste and energy sourced solely from electricity, we offer a truly sustainable refining pathway—crucial as EV demand accelerates and regulatory scrutiny tightens.
