Licube Inc. is pleased to announce its selection for the NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) International Demonstration Program, a flagship initiative supported by the Japanese government. The grant will fund the construction of a U.S.–Japan joint demonstration plant in Houston, Texas, focused on refining lithium extracted from oilfield brine into ultra-high-purity (4N-grade) lithium hydroxide — a critical material for advanced batteries, semiconductors, and fusion applications.
This project represents a major milestone in the collaboration between Japan and the United States to accelerate next-generation energy technologies and secure strategic mineral supply chains.
At its core is Licube’s patented electrodialysis-based lithium polishing technology, originally derived from nuclear fusion research and designed to produce 4N-grade lithium hydroxide with zero chemical waste and minimal energy use.
Houston was chosen for its strategic proximity to the Smackover Formation, where multiple direct lithium extraction (DLE) projects are emerging.
While many DLE companies focus on recovering lithium from brine, Licube complements their work by co-locating and collaborating — transforming extracted lithium chloride or carbonate feedstocks into ultra-pure lithium hydroxide. This approach bridges the gap between resource extraction and final refining, establishing a local, low-carbon lithium supply chain within the United States.
The NEDO grant provides several million dollars in non-dilutive funding to support plant construction and operation, advancing Licube’s mission to build a globally scalable lithium refining platform that empowers every lithium-producing region to achieve 4N purity.
As part of its commitment to inclusive growth, Licube will also implement a minimum 3% wage increase in FY2026 for eligible team members engaged in the R&D program.
